The most noticeable problem is obviously seeing water in your basement. Nobody likes to see that! It ruins boxes, furniture, carpeting, and other furnishings and belongings as well as boilers and other fixtures, and gives off a noxious, musty odor. What most people are aware of to one degree or another is that water causes mold. The reason is that mold requires three things to thrive: air, a food source, and moisture. It feasts upon almost anything from wood to sheetrock to fabric to dust. It also may cause serious health issues in humans and animals.
Mold can cause respiratory disease such as coughing, sneezing, sore throat, headaches, asthma, emphysema, flulike symptoms, memory loss and cancer. Everyone has a different tolerance level but if severe enough, mold can affect any healthy adult and is even more dangerous for children, the elderly, people with allergies and with compromised immune systems.

Contacting a Mold Inspector
A mold inspector, also known as a “mold assessor,” is the first person to call if mold is suspected, and even if no mold is immediately suspected, but water was seen entering the basement. Remember, you don’t have to see any mold for it to be dangerously present in the air. And the only way it can affect your health is to breathe it. Certified Inspections, Inc. is a mold inspection company and its president, who is a licensed mold assessor will personally come to your home or commercial workspace to inspect it. He will not only look at the area where the moisture event has occurred but will also inspect the entire house for other potential mold problems you weren’t aware of. He will take air samples and if necessary, swab samples and send them to a lab.
If the results come back positive, he will write in his report what was found, what cause was, and write a site-specific action plan called a “protocol,” that will tell exactly how it must be safely and totally remediated and how to keep it from returning ever again in the future. He can also help you locate a qualified, licensed mold remediation contractor to do the work. After the work has been done, he will return and perform a post-abatement clearance test to see if the work was successfully completed. This will protect you as well as the remediator as proof that everything is now safe, and as long as the client follows the corrective measures indicated in our report, the mold and/or water problem should never reoccur.
